The presentation assesses legal and financial strategies for managing coastal development, with a focus on the conflict between land ownership rights and preservation of coastal ecosystems via national seashore initiatives funded by eminent domain. Case studies of barrier islands, such as Cape Cod National Seashore and Fire Island National Seashore, are examined in terms of the diverse techniques used to manage the constant movement of these areas. The lecture also explores the effects of insurance on patterns of coastal settlement.
